What this course teaches you: 

  • How to structure and compartmentalise a carpet page in general 

  • How to construct the layout of the given carpet page 

  • Where to add your own creative touches 

  • Drawing individual motifs in this page including

            Khataei motifs (flowers and leaves)

             Islimi motifs (the motifs can be seen inside the small frames)

  • Preparing the paper; dying, sizing and burnishing procedures

  • Tracing the patterns on our prepared papers

  •  Gilding, mixing colours and applying them

  • Delicate outlining and Shading the Khataei motifs

  • How to elaborate the narrow decorative borders, add the needle-like motifs and finish the work

While working on this piece, you will be familiar with the principals of compositions when you combine the two main motifs (Khataei and Islimi). The focus will be on a quarter of this composition, however, through completing 1/4  of this carpet page students will be have the required skill and knowledge to complete and paint the entire page by themselves. The course will be running in 8 weeks, and each session will last 120 minutes. The classes will be held in a group format; however, Students are able to send their practices to our tutor and receive the instructions and corrections individually.Please note that the course will be recorded and you will receive the access link within few hours after the live session. If you wish to rely on the recorded class, you will get the full help and support from our tutor during the course. 

No background in arts is necessary; so beginners are welcome too. 

Among various compositions of Islamic illumination, this practice-based course focuses on one of the most significant masterpieces of the Safavid style (a 16th-century illuminated Quran) as a basis to teach Islamic Illumination techniques and skills. The course aims to instruct how simply to analyse, draw and paint this beautiful border from the Ruzbihan Quran. Participants will practice various steps of making an illumination work; from preparing the paper towards a completed work.
